My Theme Song!

Tumble outta bed
And shuffle to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of fine intentions
Yawnin’ and scratchin’ and desperate to open my eyes

Jump on the network
And Google starts Tumblin’
Out on the net
The blogs start comin’
With nerds like me on the web from 9 to 9

Blogin’ 9 to 9
Is no way to make a livin’
Never gettin’ any
It’s all typin’
An’ uploadin’
We just throw out content
And never give out credit
It’s enough to drive you
cross eyed if you let it.

9 to 9, for downloads and spam comments
You would think that we
could get some better graphics
Tried to get some memes
But YouTube won’t ever let me
I swear sometimes the web is out to get me.

Blogin’ 9 to 9
Is no way to make a livin’ ….

(Feel free to sing loudly to tune of “Working 9 to 5″ by Dolly Parton – my apologies)

Star Wars The Old Republic – Sorry Guys Not a Good Start.

Hi Zimply fans and others,

Polish is the word that Star Wars the Old Republic lacks. Firstly for some reason Australia was not felt to be important enough to release the game at the same time as the USA. Why? Who the hell knows, they probably forgot we existed. However we do exist and I suspect they have missed a bundle of players because of the curious mistake. Then they release it some many months later at double the price Amazon is selling it for so I pick up a copy and having not gone down the digital download road dutifully start loading in the 3 DVDs. Looking good and then half way through the second disk the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. Everytime! What’s worse when I go online heaps of people have had a similar experience.

Spoke to my local EB Games employee and got the usual “Don’t know anything about it mate.” “We don’t do exchanges sorry.” Now I know that is crap and consumer affairs would come down like a flock of eagles on them if they didn’t offer some support but I also know that it would be another two weeks of mucking around and they probably couldn’t sort it our anyway as no one from Bioware has probably taken the time to tell some poor bugger in Australia what the problems might be. (The death of the games store is months away I suspect – if they make Christmas it will be a true miracle.)

So back home and try the digital download. Log on, sign up, fork over my credit details and enrol for 12 months (idiot!!!). At least Pay Pal worked (sort of … for some reason Bioware still need all your details.)

Five days later and many many hours of restarts the splash screen appears after quite an enjoyable Star Wars setting the scene video. A small circle in lower right corner spins dramatically and every now and then it makes a light saber noise.

And that’s it folks! Nothing to click, no messages, zip, zilch, bugger all. Is it loaded, is it loading, is it hanging?

There is absolutely no polish in this game release. I cant believe they didn’t have a streaming loader or even some form of message to tell you what is happening. If the rest of the game – assuming I ever get it running – is like this, we have a major problem. Clearly many people are blogging and casting they love it but I am not so convinced.

In 2012 no program should have any issues loading in Windows 7. It should be seamless and ubiquitous in its delivery. This is really sloppy development and frankly I am amazed the software houses can still get away with this.

Oh well, maybe Guild Wars II will be an improvement … only time will tell.

Will give you thoughts on the game should I ever get it running. Well that’s Zimply all I have!

Change is inevitable!

Change is inevitable and this blog is no exception. A recent upgrade to WordPress appeared to have locked up all the widgets and not only could I not modify them, it was impossible to even see what was in some of them. All the content has been moved to my new wiki at Zimply Info so it is time to start afresh.

It is my intention to move the important material from the Blog and other material that my ramblings uncover into the wiki over time so it will be somewhat easier to find and add to as related material comes to hand. I think a blog is great for some commentary but does not really leave any lasting knowledge footprint. The wiki seems to be potentially good for that.

Anyhow will give it a try and see what develops. I hope you leave me some comments, particularly if you find something on the web that is interesting and others might like as well. I love a good link!
